Training through Transcripts©
Twenty years ago, David Epston developed a unique way of learning advanced therapy skills. Historically therapists have learnt advanced skills through watching others practice, often through using a one-way mirror or through videos. Nowadays there are few places where you can learn so intensively. David's pedagogy provides an answer to this woeful gap in therapist training using transcripts from your own sessions and that of others as well as videos from his own practice and that of his colleagues, and unique small group trainings and workshops in advanced narrative therapy practices.
During the apprenticeship you will present several word by word transcriptions of your own therapy sessions, which will be studied in detail by your apprenticers (David, Tom or Kay). In their study of your transcript, they will amend it by adding alternative questions (questions that they themselves would ask,) into your transcript. We will then meet with you on Zoom to discuss learning from the transcript and to teach you advanced counter-storying practices. Some of these meetings will be one-to-one intensives, and others will be small group meetings where we will engage in enthusiastic, fun, creative conversations about your practice, and that of your fellow apprentices.
This is not only a uniquely intensive learning experience, it is also a lot of fun! We bring the spirit of narrative creativity and playfulness to the learning experience. Apprentices consistently describe their learning as lighthearted, and joyful as well as remarkable! Narrative therapists of all levels of experience report rediscovering a freedom from constraint they had experienced in earlier learning of narrative therapy practice, and a newfound joy in their work.
